About Reba McEntire
It isn’t hard to find loads of information about Reba McEntire’s career. Especially with her recent successes in country music and beyond. But what most fans don’t know is how exactly this artist got her start.
As it turns out, it began shortly after Reba graduated high school. She enrolled in college at southeastern Oklahoma State University and majored in elementary education with a minor in music. She completed her student teaching program and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, all while helping out on her family’s ranch during her college years.
But then one day, Reba’s father encouraged her to try and take a gig to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Family friend and rodeo announcer Clem McSpadden helped her get hired for the gig.
Her performance at the gig impressed country artist Red Steagall. Who then welcomed Reba, her siblings, and her mother to join him at a hotel party that week. Reba performed an a capella version of Dolly Parton’s “Joshua” at the party. And Steagall later said he could sign on Reba because “She’s got something a little different.”.
Then, in 1975, Reba McEntire took a trip to Nashville to record a demo tape that STeagall hoped to pass along to record labels. And the effort worked, as she was then signed on by Glenn Keener of PolyGram/Mercury Records,
Since then, Reba has grown as a country music superstar. She has made multiple award winning singles and albums and has helped shape what country music female artists sounds like for generations to come.
